Vintage Vibe, Timeless Power – The Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s Reissue Electric Guitar in Ebony
Originally launched in 1953 as a more refined take on the classic Les Paul, the Custom model was born
from Les Paul’s own vision—he wanted a sleek, black guitar that exuded elegance, like a tuxedo. The
single cutaway version was retired in 1961 in favor of a double-cutaway design, which would later evolve
into the SG™ Custom. It wasn’t until 1968 that the original silhouette made its comeback. In the 1970s,
production shifted from Kalamazoo to Nashville, bringing with it a series of updates, including a threepiece maple top replacing the all-mahogany body, and the addition of a maple neck. These 70s-era
Les Paul Customs have since become some of the most sought-after vintage guitars on the market.
Now, for the first time in two decades, Gibson is proud to reintroduce the Les Paul Custom 70s. This
model faithfully captures the spirit of the era, featuring a mahogany body with a three-piece maple top, 5-
ply top binding, and 3-ply back binding. The maple neck sports a 70s-style profile with a volute and is
paired with a bound ebony fretboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, and mother-of-pearl block inlays. The
headstock, also bound, showcases the iconic Custom Split Diamond inlay—an elegant detail first seen on
the Gibson Super 400.
Gold hardware completes the vintage aesthetic, including an aluminum Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge,
Stop Bar tailpiece, and Grover® Rotomatic® tuners with Keystone buttons for dependable tuning.
Authentic touches abound, from Posi-Lok™ strap locks and a 5-ply pickguard to Witch Hat knobs true to
the decade. Under the hood, a pair of Calibrated T-Type humbuckers™ delivers era-accurate tone, with
hand-wired electronics and Orange Drop® capacitors ensuring rich, expressive sound.
Available in four stunning gloss nitrocellulose finishes—Ebony, Tobacco Burst, Wine Red, and
Buttercream Top—each Les Paul Custom 70s comes housed in a protective hardshell case, ready for the
road or the studio.
The Les Paul Custom is back—and it’s ready to make history all over again.
