Impossible Colors is the ultimate fuzz for Baltimore Sonic Research Institute and what the brand was aiming for when designing it. The goal was a single pedal that could cover dirt tones ranging from overdrive through distortion and on into totally compressed splattery fuzz that has hints of octave, ghost tones, and surprisingly accurate horn emulation. There is dynamic analog dirt in the in-between tones and, for the adventurous, absolute delight in the extremes.

• Volume sets the output volume with ample boost above unity
• Attack controls input gain from light boost to heavy clipping
• Texture adjusts voltage to alter dynamic range and clipping character
• Voice is a tilt EQ combining low pass and high pass filters
• Range switch sets the Texture control range for either clear or glitchy tones
• Depth switch selects frequency ranges, from tight to horn-like suboctave effects
• Mode switch toggles between three clipping configurations from dynamic overdrive to full fuzz

Baltimore Sonic Research Institute also wanted a fuzz that was agnostic about placement before or after buffers while still having massive dynamic range and texture, so the design includes a transformer-coupled input stage that emulates both single coil and humbucker pickups to give the user maximum flexibility when incorporating Impossible Colors into their rig.

Note: Some combinations of settings may cause oscillation. Raising the Attack control setting will usually retain the sound you had while cutting off the oscillation. Or maybe you like the oscillation. Do you!

Impossible Colors is unique among Baltimore Sonic Research Institute products in using vintage transistors to achieve its complex blend of tones. During circuit development, the company spent months sorting through all available components in the shop and sourcing the right parts from around the world to make it sound exactly as intended. The parts are not “magic” or anything like that—they are simply tested and selected for each unit to do exactly what they are supposed to do. It takes a little extra time, but for this circuit, Baltimore Sonic Research Institute believes it’s worth the effort.
