The Gibson L-00 Special is one of the most well-known and popular small-body acoustic guitars in Gibson’s history. First introduced in 1932, it continues to be a staple among guitarists. The new L-00 Special is built in Bozeman, Montana, by Gibson’s expert acoustic luthiers, providing a high-quality USA-made acoustic guitar at an accessible price. It features a solid mahogany back and sides, along with a solid Sitka spruce top supported by traditional scalloped X-bracing. This construction results in a well-balanced tone with an excellent dynamic range, making it a great choice for a small-bodied acoustic. The single-ply binding on both the top and back adds to its classic aesthetic.
The L-00 body shape is known for its narrower waist, which helps produce a focused and nuanced sound. This natural design gives the guitar a leaner and tighter bass response, making it sit perfectly in a mix. It is particularly well-suited for fingerstyle playing and blues, though it also performs well across other genres and playing styles.
The utile neck is attached to the body using a compound dovetail joint, a traditional technique that ensures stability and resonance. Like all Gibson acoustic guitars, it is secured with hot hide glue. The neck features a SlimTaper™ profile, providing a comfortable and fast-playing experience. The rosewood fretboard has a 12-inch radius and is adorned with simple mother-of-pearl dot inlays. It is equipped with 19 frets, while the closed-slot rectangular rosewood bridge comes with a TUSQ® saddle. The nut and bridge pins are also made of TUSQ, contributing to improved sustain and tonal clarity.
For tuning stability, the L-00 Special is fitted with Grover® Mini Rotomatic® tuners. This guitar is finished in satin nitrocellulose lacquer Satin Vintage Sunburst.
On the electronics side, the L-00 Special is equipped with an L.R. Baggs™ Element Bronze active under-saddle piezo pickup and an active preamp. The soundhole-mounted volume control makes it easy to adjust levels while playing. This feature ensures the guitar is stage- and studio-ready right out of the box.
